Day 34: Playa Tortugas to Lima, Peru
Wednesday, March 17th – We awoke in our suffocating little room at the Hostel El Farol after a poor night’s sleep – it had been way too hot without aircon, and Larry’s nasal passage vibrations had been a serious disturbance. We rode the dirt road along the bay to get some breakfast at one of the Playa’s cafes, and were back out on the highway before 9am, ploughing on southwards through the desert. About noon we got stopped by a highway patrol-type cop who tried to shake us down for some money saying we’d been overtaking over the double-yellow. We folded our arms, shook our heads and didn’t speak any spanish until he gave up and let us go. We cut off the PanAm’ into a little town – think it was Supe Puerto - and had a great Peruvian lunch at a cool restaurant we found after asking some locals.

Note to self: although I’ve taken a coupla evening spanish classes and can speak a bit, the people are such an important source of help with directions – ‘cos the road signs are mierda – and local advice, that I must study more so I can speak the lingo better next time I’m south of da border.
As we got closer to Lima, the road split into a divided 4-laner and we made good time right to the outskirts, whereupon we hit the usual traffic insanity as we navigated ourselves around the city to the southwest, heading towards a barrio – neighborhood - of Lima by the beach called Miraflores. We stopped once there to call some hostels out of our favorite guidebook, but struck out as our choices were full. We noticed some hotels right in the area where we were at, and after asking around for 15 minutes, got ourselves situated in a quiet, comfortable, basic and friendly hostel one block off the main drag… it’s always a relief when you get yourself situated for the night. We wandered around Miraflores, which reminds me of the bustle of London, scarfed down some nosh and a jug o’ overly-sweet sangria at a corner restaurant, and walked around and then back to the hostel to grab some shuteye, needed after last night’s snorefest.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
