In the following narrative and possibly in subsequent narratives, I shall refer to my friends as Larry and Moe and their chosen brand of motorcycle as Brand X – in order to protect the innocent, and the not-so-innocent alike.

The outline of this adventure was conceived over dinner and adult beverages back in November. The original scope was a somewhat mad – San Francisco to Tierra Del Fuego in about 4 weeks. The starting point of the trip started shifting along with the tides and the weather: originally Buenos Aires – necessitating a 20′ container and 4 weeks of shipping time – eventually San Francisco, which would made the launch a doddle, or so I thought…

I have been dreaming on jumping on my bike and riding due south, until there’s no more south to go, for many years. I don’t like the cold so Alaska’s out, and riding ’round America is too easy – I’ll do it when I’m old. I mean really old. So when Larry and Moe talked about riding south for a month or two I was IN.

Currently we’re in holding pattern awaiting the successful running of Brand X motorcycle #2. Brand X motorcycle #1 is running and loaded – I’ve seen the pics, but #2 was short a cylinder as of this morning while the base gasket was getting replaced.

You can see in the pics my trusty Multistrudel emerging from the garage into daylight for an “almost fully packed” test ride on the freeway. Jacking up the rear end and adding a bunch of preload to the shock helped the bike run super-stable on 280 to Pacifica and back. The last shot is on 24th street parked near my fave coffee shop.
